Jiro Shimada arrives in San Francisco, July 1937, a dejected young man. His lifelong dream of becoming a navy fighter pilot has been thwarted. His older brother is already a navy pilot, and that's enough pilots from one household according to Hiroyoshi, Jiro's father. His mother, Shizue, on the other hand, has information to suggest that Jiro could be conscripted into the army as a foot soldier--a far more dangerous activity than flying combat aircraft. So with the help of the admiral, an old friend of Hiroyoshi, Jiro is assigned to a government program to be conducted in America. So his dream must wait, but not for long....
